Economic and Social Research
The Department of Economic and Social Research is engaged in conducting in-depth studies on various areas of interest to the legislators. Through research, data collection, and analysis in various areas of development policy and economic management, the Institute assists the work of the National Assembly.
It plays a leading role in enabling the National Assembly to keep abreast of cutting-edge developments, and to contribute to the shaping of development perspectives and strategies.
The Institute collaborates with other policy research centres, universities, government and non-governmental institutions in order to ensure its technical quality in research. The output of such works are published in a language and style easily understood by members of the National Assembly and the general public.
Augustine Osigwe
Dr. Augustine Osigwe presently the Acting Director of the Department of Economic and Social Research at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), National Assembly, Abuja. His academic credentials include:

Dr. Osigwe’s professional experience includes: – Lecturer, Department of Economics and Development Studies, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ebonyi State (2015-2017) – Research Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan – Research project participation with NISER and Human Science Research Council, South Africa
He possesses expertise in research report writing, presentation, and macro econometric modeling. Dr. Osigwe has published in numerous international and local journals, participated in conferences and workshops, and consulted for organizations such as the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and Shell Petroleum Development Company, Nigeria. Dr. Osigwe’s leadership skills are evident in his roles as Governor of Abdulsalami Abubakar Hall at the University of Ibadan and President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE) student wing (2012-2014). He is known for being dependable, motivated, committed, and self-disciplined.
Three divisions
Research Division
Responds to research requests from members and committees, and provides socio-economic analysis of proposed and existing legislation.
Training Division
Works alongside the Department's research teams to plan and support capacity-building programmes for legislators and staff.
Library
Ensures each research team has timely access to the materials it needs, and maintains the Department's research holdings.
Functions & impact
Conducts in-depth research, data collection and analysis on development policy and economic management to assist the work of the National Assembly.
Collaborates with policy research centres, universities, and government and non-governmental institutions to ensure technical quality.
Publishes research output in language and style accessible to members of the National Assembly and the general public.
Analyses proposed and existing legislation to highlight socio-economic implications and areas for legislative action.
Conducts periodic research on sectoral issues and Nigeria's economic management.
Reviews government policy documents to strengthen implementation and good governance.
Prepares briefs on topical socio-economic issues for committee and plenary debates.
Serves as secretariat to technical committees on economic management, revenue mobilisation and public financial management.
