National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) has celebrated the seventh anniversary of the appointment of its Director General, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, bringing together distinguished guests, members of the National Assembly, management, staff and other stakeholders to reflect on the Institute’s remarkable transformation under his leadership.

The celebration featured a keynote address by Distinguished Senator Shehu Sani, who underscored the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting quality legislative research and sustaining capacity development for effective governance. He commended Prof. Sulaiman’s visionary leadership and the remarkable strides recorded by NILDS in advancing legislative development, democratic governance, and policy research in Nigeria. Other dignitaries and members of the National Assembly present also applauded the Director General’s achievements and the Institute’s growing impact over the past seven years.

A major highlight of the event was a fireside chat with Prof. Sulaiman, during which he reflected on the Institute’s journey over the past seven years. He highlighted key milestones, including institutional reforms, research innovations, strategic partnerships, expanded academic programmes, and capacity building initiatives that have positioned NILDS as a leading centre for legislative studies and democratic governance in Africa.

The celebration also featured the commissioning of the NILDS Clinic, a landmark initiative conceived under Prof. Sulaiman’s leadership to improve access to quality healthcare services for members of staff and promote their well-being. The facility reflects the Institute’s commitment to staff welfare and the creation of a healthy, productive and enabling work environment.

The event concluded with tributes to Prof. Sulaiman’s seven years of visionary leadership and a renewed commitment to building on the Institute’s achievements as NILDS continues to strengthen legislative institutions, promote democratic governance, advance evidence based policy-making, and build capacity for sustainable national development.
