NILOWV, NILDS Strengthen Partnership on Women’s Political Participation

 

The President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, today led a delegation on a courtesy and advocacy visit to National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

The visit focused on strengthening collaboration between NILOWV and NILDS in women’s political participation, legislative capacity development, gender-responsive legislation and inclusive democratic governance.

Speaking during the engagement, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote democratic participation and build the capacity of stakeholders within Nigeria’s legislative and democratic institutions.

The NILOWV President commended NILDS for its support for the League’s advocacy for the Special Seats Bill. She noted that increased representation of women in legislative institutions must be complemented by the knowledge, skills and confidence required to effectively influence legislation and public policy.

She also sought NILDS’ support in developing a structured capacity-building programme for NILOWV’s National Executive Council members, State Chairpersons and Programme Officers, who would serve as Advocacy Champions in communities across Nigeria.

The delegation further presented plans for NILOWV’s 30th anniversary celebration.
